Becoming a foster carer

Our foster carers come from a variety of backgrounds. They have a range of life and work experiences enabling them to provide a loving and supportive home. It is important for us to place children in a home that best matches their needs.

Your role as a foster carer

Day-to-day foster care is much like the daily routine of most families; taking children to school, making sure they do homework, watching TV together, taking an interest and offering support where needed.

Support

To ensure that every child in care thrives, we provide children and foster carers with the support necessary to achieve their goals. We provide regular home visits, offer parenting and behavioural strategies, and work with health and educational staff to create a team around your child.

Training

Before your first placement, you need to attend a four-day ‘Skills to Foster’ course where you will learn the fundamental skills of safeguarding, behavioural management, and child support. As an approved foster carer, you will also benefit from attending regular training that relates to the needs of children in your care. This training supports your growth and development as a carer.

Allowances

Once approved as a carer and a child is placed with you, you will be provided with a weekly allowance. The allowance covers the day-to-day expenses of looking after a child along with a fee element. There are also extra allowances to promote holidays and celebrations.
